Screw It

Part of RISD Class of 2022 Senior Exhibition: FOUND-ATION

Screw It is a piece about growth. The handmade high chair was passed down from the owner’s mother, but was unfortunately too small for his daughter. Bisected and affixed with industrial threaded rods, the disconnect of the chair connected by steel represents the breach between childhood and present self. Its structural instability over time reflects the growing need for tenacity and resilience that comes with age.  An object intended for children is confronted with the lack of functionality and comfort, despite its size being able to support an adult. In essence, it is quite like growing up – aimlessly finding our place in the world and not quite fitting in.

FOUND-ATION is an adaptive reuse exhibition that sheds light on the core concepts of readapt, refurbish, and recuperate - to bring life back into pieces of furniture that have been abandoned. Using found objects and materials, each project has been thoughtfully curated with intertwined memories that are important to us. Moving forward from our college phase in life, packing up and leaving towards the next journey, the shipping boxes allow us to take a moment to reminisce the years passed and leave us hopeful for the future. As the boxes give us a nudge towards “new beginnings,” we hope to do the same with each found object.
