Stoop

Home for found objects.

In New York, every matter is in a constant state of change. In and out, new and old, young and aged, everything has a story to be told.

Enabled by the complex system of the city's infrastructures, the tactile experience of "stooping" is enriched with feelings of anticipation, thrill, and surprise. The practice has become widely popularized since the pandemic as it promotes indirect social interaction and builds a sense of connection from an unknown stranger to another. At the same time, these objects are being rescued from the waste stream and take part in alleviating the responsibilities of DSNY.

Stoop takes inspiration from the Instagram account @stoopingnyc. The account features images of discarded furniture/household items on the streets of New York. Each post is accompanied by the intersection or street where the item can be claimed. With services that educates, repairs, and refurbishes these finds, Stoop aims to extend the stooping experience while promoting entertainment, community, and more importantly sustainability. These objects are not “trash,” but a new layer to the historic and multilayered narrative of the city.
