Flectitur

Imbalance and asymmetry.

Derived from three approaches of everyday building elements to best suit a designated user group, each member brought in a typology that informed the visual and ergonomic language used to design Flectitur. Through the course of the design process, an iterative approach was taken towards sculpting, creating, and fabricating the final product. All three initial projects were developed with regard to the lower body such as stairs, seats, and hardwares that are typically interacted with the upper body. Much of architecture and interior design assumes a young able-bodied audience. Poor physical structures and fixtures create great obstacles for individuals with disabilities, and it is crucial to design for all.

Significant detail has been placed upon the posterior region of the body, thus placing a low backrest for enhanced comfort. Adapted from the previously developed visual language of the hardware and door knobs, a deflection to the straight and erect typology was created. The asymmetrical upholstery reflects this curvature from the backrest to further reinforce the appearance of imbalance. Whether in the workplace or home, Flectitur aims to provide repose, comfort, and utility through its ergonomic and comforting nature.
